The thing is I’m not a tough guy, I’m just a normal well adjusted adult who can evaluate a film without thinking “yikes” like a hysterical baby.
But isn’t the point of films to make you feel things? So what’s wrong with feeling “yikes” to certain stuff?

Something making you uncomfortable is fine — it’s the insistence that the film then becomes morally egregious because of that which I take issue with.
you can look at the movie very simply as just a story about Jordan Belfort's life, which in that case there is no problem with it.
but, i do think the movie glorifies yuppie culture. Jordan does lose his family and goes to jail in the end of it, but most people I know who love the film just see Jordan as being a fkn beast who finessed his way into some good times and money and was boning margot robbie, and the only thing he got was a slap on the wrist. Again, this could just be showing how unserious our justice system treats white collar crimes, thus making it a reality. but i dont think that necessarily a good reality to advertise in a sense, nor do i think many took away that message, more so just that being a scummy stock trader is fkn sick!
wolf of wall street is every crypto bro’s dream
I swear I didn’t see none of you guys around during my LP meltdown
Yeah I wasn’t there. But I talked w a group of friends about the movie in person and most of us didn’t vibe w the movie’s sensibilities there. One of my friends was cool w it but he also said he had a relationship w an older woman growing up.
My whole thing was, if the roles were reversed, everyone would see it for what it was. But the infantilization of women gives more room to see the movie’s relationship as romantic and not-creepy
Art can absolutely be problematic man lol
No. Also hilarious you have the cannibal romance movie as your avy.

well, art is hardly immoral. So there are some things that are bound to make ppl question the production, wether it’s how it’s made, the values being communicated, or how the art is utilized in relation to real-world actions
That’s why my example was Fitzcarraldo. The movie itself seems like a complex, ‘unproblematic’ (to me) story. But the production involved the destruction and violation of indigenous lives and environments. I don’t think a well adjusted adult response would be “well, things happen. Herzog is a talented director with good intentions to make ‘good art’ so all is well”
Some people call art problematic and say that means you shouldn’t engage it. That doesn’t tend to be my response. I still watched and would PERHAPS recommend all of the things I called problematic itt

I never read it as romantic, but as yet another one of PTA’s messy but certainly not endorsed relationships. I’m not expanding any further with this because the discourse around this movie was exhausting and is annoying.

So you don’t think the recent news on Romeo and Juliet isn’t problematic? The fact the filmmakers had underage kids getting naked on film?

I’m more empathetic to critiquing how something was made. The production can certainly be “problematic” but once something becomes art the conversation shifts in my eyes.

getting that out of that movie is peak twitter brain rot, lets me know all i need to know

How is that recent news? Also considering my favorite film of all time is Valerie And Her Week of Wonders—then the answer is no I don’t.

That isn’t what I got out of the film, but it’s what idiots who problematize art think.

Lmao you’re lying if that ending wasn’t intended to be romantic, the two share their first kiss, confess their love and run off into the sunset happily ever after.

I’m not debating this with you. You called Elric a pedophile for liking the movie.
Just bc the movie goes “this isn’t good” doesn’t mean the movie is good as result.
Will never understand how ppl enjoyed a movie that central plot was grooming a young girl to become a p***star. S*** was OD weird whether the movie intended to send a message or not.
I don’t think you know what problematic means
unless it’s overtly sexualizing minors like Cuties or some s***, it’s not that wild to use something like that as a plot device to express a character is evil
How is that recent news? Also considering my favorite film of all time is Valerie And Her Week of Wonders—then the answer is no I don’t.
Meaning it recently came out that the cast wants to sue.
I haven’t seen that film, but lemme make sure I understood you. You’re saying you do not think it’s problematic to have kids get naked on camera for a movie?
Dancer In the Dark is another good example. I love Björk’s performance but most of my friends are (reasonably) against watching the film due to her experience of sexual harassment. I wish I could talk to some of them about it bc I loved the movie but I’m sympathetic to the resistance
EEAAO is probably problematic and leaves me sick in my stomach

Hate what happened to my baby but that’s one of the best movies ever made so I cant justify not watching it bc of it
Young film enthusiasts realize depiction ≠ endorsement challenge (impossible).

Well understood concept at one point that’s been sadly thrown out the window
I’m still waiting to hear how kids literally being asked to get naked on camera isn’t considered problematic….
