I hear you but, Hip-Hop has changed
Rap has changed. No longer it is this energetic yet thoughtful and meditative algamation of a whole rich culture. Hip-hop has always dealt in extremes. Whether reality or fantasy, a celebration or mourning, there was room in hip-hop for the endless spectrum of the human condition. They managed to tackle important socio-economical issues in a stylish manner, meant to go hard in the clubs and in the skreets.
The great Rappers were dearing and bold and not fearing to challenge the status-quo. In one word, they were authentically rebelious.
Commentators and religious leaders erronously accused the genre of being limited to promoting criminal behaviour, perpetuating fear-mongering.
But the sad thing is, as much as those critiques were surface level attempts at dismissing the genre, I can't deny that their commentary was prophetic...
This new wave of mumble rap, the Lil Uzi Verts, the Playboi Cartis, the Little Pimps they are the worst thing to happen to music. They show not a hint of depth to their artistry. It is not far fetched to say they lack any talent. In many ways, it is a projection of the reality of late-stage capitalism that we live in. The best way to describe it is manufactured automated music : each track is made in a very short time and with no passion. This is evident by the abundance of "leaks" these rappers nowadays have. They promote a morally decadent vision of a d***ged up, violent hyper-consumerist and hyper-sexualized society... All in the service of western corporate neo-liberalism.
You may laugh at me KTT all you want, ridicule me all you want and avi-post me all you want. But deep down you all know it is nothing but an attempt to run away from this intellectual discourse. Perhaps it is unconfortable for you to admit that the thing you're most passionate about is merely a shell of its former self and has in fact become a driving force to the worst in our society. I dont blame you in fact for feeling like this. But remember what the great Gilles Deleuze once said: " It's not easy to see things from the middle, rather than looking from above or up at them, from below, or from left to right or right to left: try it, you'll see that everything changes."
