My review for Just Be by Tiesto

I had absolutely no idea what to expect coming into this but I am very happy I got this album. I don't know the first thing about trance music but this s*** is very dope. It's a testament to how great this album is when an artist can convey emotions through electronic music.
Those harmonies on "A Tear In The Open" are so gorgeous and when the beat dropped
A very wonderful song. I don't really know how to review an album like this, I think it's best to just describe how it made me feel and it made me very happy. I wasn't too fond of "Sweet Misery" on my first listen but it clicked the second time around. Some of these track lengths are a bit long and they do drag on, for me personally anyway, but I understand it. Fantastic album after two full listens, one with headphones and the other on speakers. Pretty sure my neighbors are tired of hearing "A Tear In The Open" by now. Absolutely going to be checking out the rest of his discography. Down the rabbit hole I go.

@RVI
glad you liked. if you want to check more of his discography id recommend the In Search of Sunrise or Magik mix series before his actual albums. and prob start with In Search of Sunrise vol 1
also fun fact about him is the guy Tiesto himself isnt really the main producer for all that music, he was more the DJ and a guy called Dennis Waakop Reijers was the main collaborator who was actually making more of the music. which is partly why id recommend DJ mix instead of studio albums. "Tiesto" was kinda like a brand or a duo with one guy as the face and performer and the other guy behind the scenes
i listened to mostly electronic music up until high school but trance was always the one style that connected with me most above the rest of the ethereal atmosphere, melody and emotion
Kate Bush - Never for Ever

(Sorry if this review sounds like a book report written by a high schooler an hour before class starts, I don’t usually write about music longform like this plus I’m a bit hungover from drinking last night)
Kate Bush is an interesting artist for me. I found out about her back in 2016 when I heard Cloudbusting in a mashup with California Gurlz by Katy Perry done by Neil Cicierega (coincidentally is also Lemon Demon). I ended up checking out Hounds of Love like 3 years later and while I enjoyed it I wasn’t head over heels for the album at large, although I mainly heard it while driving doing UberEats delivery so I probably wasn’t the most attentive listener anyways. Fast forward to now, where I’m listening to this at home in silence with noise-cancelling headphones so I feel a bit more present with her music then now.
Babushka starts this album out very strong. At first I wrote the song off as telling the same story as that one “if you like pina coladas” song from like the 70s but soon after I realized that there’s something really cool happening here. The instrumental, Kate’s vocals during the verses especially, add to an atmosphere of mystique and deception that I got really into. Right into the final chorus with the shattering sounds (which I actually learned about from a Vox Music video, that it came from one of the very first DAWs from the 70s), adds a lot to my enjoyment. Great start.
Deilius is an interesting song. The combination of (middle eastern? indian?) string instruments alongside the suggestive piano melody alongside with the sparse but abstract lyrics give this a warm, moonlit late night vibe that I enjoy, however the occasional male spoken word/chants add kinda take me out a bit. After hearing Hounds of Love though, I would guess this might’ve been intentional by Kate. Thinking of the song as a whole, this song makes me think of a woman talking to an older man and she realizes that the only thing she likes about him is the stories he tells her about traveling the world and not much else. Perhaps I’m just projecting. Good song regardless.
At first I was more into the sentiment of Blow Away than the song itself. It’s a fine song but the melody reminds me a lot of Plastic Love by Mariya Takeuchi (not the song’s fault tho lol). This song feels like a bit of a twist on the feeling of immortality that artists have by making art that’ll outlive themselves (i’ve been mainly hearing it referenced in film like Babylon (2022) or Hua Yang De Nian Hua (2001) but I think JPEGMAFIA mentioned it in HAZARD DUTY PAY! ), in the sense that Kate still has a fear of death, reflected in the chorus, which honestly resonates with me pretty emotionally–the way she’s pleading is…really sad. I almost teared up. Pretty good song too.
All We Ever Look For is better written than actually produced imo. I do like the ideas of parenthood, childhood turning into adulthood, parents wanting their kids to be better than themselves, adults that want a bit of the security that they felt with their parents in a romantic partner (not in a Freudian way, u know what i mean!), etc. As far as the instrumental goes, the melody feels a little unintentionally sarcastic to me, maybe it’s cause the whistles and wind instruments sound like MIDI files that just come off as sterile to me. Doesn’t ruin the song for me completely, but it does take me out of the song a decent bit, kinda makes me feel like I’m playing a 90’s point and click adventure game at times.
Egypt is the opposite feeling for me compared to All We Ever Look For–i like the production and Kate’s vocal delivery a lot more than the actual story. Highlights for me are the pretty good dark instrumental ending and Kate’s animated delivery in the verses. I didn’t really understand the story being told here but my guess is that it’s about an Egyptian king being seduced by his queen to neglect his people. I think. Or maybe its about falling in love with a cat, i don’t know.
The Wedding List is fun, despite the dark subject matter. It feels like if The Police made a song for a musical (in a good way). That “I’m coming for you…” hook is very sticky and the American accent on the chorus is fun (as in more enjoyable if not taken too seriously). Obviously a tale of violent, sad revenge though especially with the reveal of a unborn child at the end.
Oh wow Violin…a hard rock song in tribute to the violin? That’s super creative. Kate’s vocals fit pretty well in this glam rock (hair metal? I don’t know rock genres man)...i’m just not big on this type of rock music. It sounds very authentic though which I’ll give major props to her for though.
Alright not gonna lie I had to Google what Infant Kiss was about…cause I was definitely misinterpreting that story at first. Nonetheless, a twisted story that I liked but don’t know if I’d return to that often.
Oh my god, I love Army Dreamers. The ethereal isolated harmony in Night Scented Stock (i mean its a separate track but it flows so perfectly into this track that I think it’s necessary to mention here), the subtle melancholy in the melody and Kate’s delivery are subtly melancholic, the forward momentum of the drums sounding like a funeral march, the story of a mother mourning the loss of her military son, f***ing incredible.
Finally we come to Breathing. Nuclear war anxiety songs can resonate with me (1999 - Prince, Iacon - fallout == Death) however this one feels a little melodramatic to me. The second half with the drums does hit for me though regardless. I was headbanging a bit.
Overall I was satisfied with this record. Kate Bush is an artist with a lot of range clearly, and there a no tracks there that feel half-hearted or unauthentic. Are there moments that do feel a little over-the-top or kinda silly? Yeah, but I think that’s an appeal of the record too. There are no tracks I genuinely dislike and I could see myself revisiting this as a whole, but I would definitely have to be in a certain mood. Definitely need to revisit Hounds of Love after hearing this though.
Rating: 7/10

i think this album is a 10/10 so im kinda biased lol but yeah absolutely, especially if you've heard a bit of it already.
Even if u end up hating it it's one of those albums where it's just so uniquley singular in execution imo that it's worth at least listening to at least once
