It's not a journalist's job to sit around and wait for music to grow on them. They're hired to speak their perspective, provide a holistic view of the record that readers can use to decide if they want to hear the album, and offer a bit of cultural context. If opinions change, retrospective reviews are a thing. Pitchfork does those over the weekend.
I'm not defending Pitchfork, they're corporate shills that churn out garbage content, but they're not unique in wanting to get reviews out quickly. It's been like this forever.
It's also a journalist's job to at least attempt to approach the project "critically." Try to minimize any biases that they carry. Like the whole Travis isn't deep, he's a d***gie, he's putting his fans lives in danger, etc. I'm not saying that stuff isn't true (hint: none of it is). But as a critic, you have to critically appraise the art.
