This is so good so much better than I thought it would be
That post was mostly a joke responding to the other post, part of my point is I don’t think there’s THAT big of a difference from D&B and Garage honestly and it’s kinda funny that dude was all bent out of shape about the distinction
I like PinkPantheress and UK artists but when y’all talk about the little micro genres y’all supposedly invented you lose me
lmao there's a massive difference between dnb and garage. For a start dnb is usually about 30-40 beats per minute faster than dnb, and the sounds are different too.
Pinkpantheress isn't really a very accurate introduction to garage though. Even on Pain it feels like she's got a different vibe to the original sample Flowers by Sunship/Sweet Female Attitude.
Dnb and jungle are way closer, but still different.
There is a distinction as well as similarities, at the end of the day I think genres are useless and people should just make whatever they want
i think this is true with most genres, i guess the only thing with some of these subgenres like garage, grime, jungle, whatever. Is they also come along with very specific subcultures. So it's not as meaningless as a tag like britpop or hyperpop that literally only comes from some journalist rather than an actual scene.

Yeah I actually thought about this when writing that post, I like to think of movements instead of genres idk if that makes sense

In a way I agree about not calling them genres, as it's really the subcultures around them that probably had the biggest impact. Those scenes completely shifted British culture, which as a legacy will last way longer than any sound.
That being said, all those genres like jungle, dnb, garage, grime, dubstep etc. have their own unique sound. Maybe one of the reasons people don't see that, is usually when it crosses over to the mainstream, like it is on this project, it's fused with something else. Or in the case of grime, the biggest names in the genre have had hits with other genres too. Or it's a star from a genre being borrowed to be put on a track that isn't their sound at all

Tbf though Flowers is a sample of this classical piano piece that's been sampled in a million things, so I wasn't sure if she'd sampled flowers or that, but apparently it's some karaoke version of flowers or something

I literally met my gf of 3 years bc she played Flowers at an event we were working together lol. I legit might not have ever spoken to her if not for that song
