"People are less willing to listen to electronic music that is made by a Black woman. That’s just fact."

"When I have these pinch me moments, it’s like, ‘wow, I really need to hold on to this, because I don’t know when the next one will be. I suppose it’s harder for me to be taken seriously and rise the ranks.”

"There’s some considerations I would like to get as an artist which I might not be getting right now, since maybe it’s harder to put me into a genre… I’m hitting all these markers and it still feels like I’m getting overlooked, simply because there’s a lot of people that don’t necessarily understand what I represent, nor do they want to take a look because I think it just doesn’t make sense for them."

"Having that person challenging the way a pop star should look or be — which is what I do, unintentionally and sometimes intentionally — it just doesn’t translate to a lot of people."

"All I aim to do is stay authentic and consistent. And occasionally, what I enjoy doing is saying, ‘well actually, I’m gonna prove you wrong, and I’m gonna do this, you are gonna like it.’ And then once you like it, you’re gonna realize: ‘Wait, I don’t know why I never gave her a chance in the first place.’"

She’s right that a lot of black women in electronic music do get overlooked, but she also mainly works with white electronic producers herself.

Kelela’s last album for example was club influenced and produced by majority black producers (BAMBII, LSDXOXO, AceMo ect.)

I mean this is a constant problem in the electronic scene to be fair, but she in particular needs to be given her flowers. Boy’s A Liar being a top 10 hit remains f***ing insane in the current pop climate. She’s got the sauce and it’s only a matter of time before the world catches up.

I’m saying not to discount how she feels here but she’s a pretty popular artist there’s a whole wave of black female artists in this genre that get just a little bit of shine

Yeah, my point is basically does she just want white validation or actual change. BAMBII's production credits on Kelela's album Raven were a big deal. She became very popular after that and is well known in the electronic industry now.

she probably gets all this love online but in person, the crowds not really resonating or giving the energy she thinks it should be giving. reminds me of her sxsw set

I do think as a performer tho its on her to find the balance that translates her recordings to live music well to fans

That sxsw performance was pretty bad and she was part of the problem. Crowds can be wildly different each night but its her responsibility to control it and pull more from them if that's what she wants

I also agree with this, part of the show is crowd participation

but also, she has to realize if it’s not her show and if she’s not main line, fans are really hard to win over

Jordan Ward was on stage opening for 6lack and he was so energetic and engaging the crowd, but it just didn’t resonate with the people and it was funny, but corny, even if he was being himself and the music was amazing. the next girl came out, kept it real subtle and chill, but engaged the audience in between each song real chill but the crowd was eating it up

so yea, it’s definitely up to the artist to adjust and not just be up there in their own world at times and respond to what the crowd is giving you or reacting well to rather than digging at the same hole lmao. but I’m not an expert, just a longtime observer of what I’ve seen work and not work

I think that people are skipping over her because of her hyperfemme sound = aesthetic

i don't necessarily disagree with her sentiment but i also don't agree that she's a victim of this
