Portrayal of racism
I really don't get that critique...the restaurant owner is supposed to be an ignorant jackass and his (first) wife is even shown looking visibly uncomfortable while the main characters just chuckle uncomfortably...also that restaurant owner was based on a real person...I didn't feel it was something for the audience to laugh at except for maybe in a "haha oh wow that guys a piece of s\*\*\*" kinda way...Wolf of Wall Street is hilarious and also full of awful people saying and doing awful things...doesn't mean you as the viewer are supposed to relate or agree with the a\*\*\*\*\*\*

Asian man was complaining cause other non-Asian people in his theater were laughing. That’s where the controversy comes from.

I can understand the frustration there and that's unfortunate but s***ting on the film itself bc of that particular audience's reaction isn't right either...in my theater there were a few awkward laughs but again I feel it was more "haha wow this guys a jerk" rather than "haha his offensive Asian impression is so funny"

My theatre half full of Asians was just
and groaning
Movie stuck with me more than I thought it would
been floating around in the back of my head since I saw it

Opposite for me.
I keep forgetting this movie exists until I see this thread pop up

Same. Only thing I'd say is that I feel like could of cut out some of the waterbed stuff, maybe
I wish it didn’t leave theaters so quick in my area so I could rewatch
Every time I think about it I remember the s*** I loved until I remember the things that didn’t stick right with me

I’m not sure why this kind of humor is any different than what like every comedy podcast does now. It’s also just sort of presenting a time and a culture as it was. People would have been like that and no one would have directly called it out as bad.

Why are you bringing up comedy podcasts like Shane Gillis didn’t literally lose a cushy mainstream job over an Asian joke on one? Also, there aren’t multimillion dollar media campaigns for comedy podcasts, at least the “edgy” ones

I’m just messing around bro. It’s just hard to go from realizing this is one of the most financially successful podcasts in the country doing 20+ minute bits like this…

…to there being a controversy about what comes out of the mouth of an actual bigot character in a movie set in the 70’s.

Same reason why Opie and Anthony crossed lines in the ‘00s that South Park, or even Drawn Together, couldn’t even dream of. Even the most edgy movie you can think of isn’t s*** compared to Howard Stern
So nobody wants to go to their privileged movie theater and record this for us peasants?
