Third watch.
Got to soak in the world and all the little details.
IT’S A CLASSIC.
HE. DON’T. F***ING. MISS.
There’s something about where he takes his characters…. How they orbit each other.
It’s like a dance.
Picture day. Combing your hair. EXPLOSION in the toilet. Teenage boys running. Sprinklers… Alana.
This movie is pure freedom.
Freedom from narrative. Childhood freedom. It’s a time machine. To a time without phones. The radio tuning you into some groovy new track. Pin-balling between some new tail and a new scheme.
I think what I appreciate most about THIS Paul Thomas Anderson movie, is that he really captures what it feels like to be on the cusp of adulthood.
Alana is playing pretend. What I love about this performance, is the insecurity. “I have integrity” she says as she meets a new mayoral candidate she hopes to work for. She always sounds like she’s overcompensating, like she’s overwhelmed, lost in this world. And yes, she sees someone with direction in Gary.
Much like Lancaster Dodd completes Freddie, much like Alma completes Reynolds Woodcock, Gary completes Alana.
And he’s lovable. Cooper Hoffman is not trying to impress with his performance and I love that. He’s just giving the sweet, awkward energy we also saw in his father. RIP Mr. Hoffman.
The dialogue is so real, and as awkward as life is. All the vignettes in the movie are expertly handled. Giving us a window into a moment, grounding us with period details, or a specific emotion, and whisking us on to the next window. It has the plotless lilt of a movie from the 60s, but with a master hand, where we’re always aware that he could drive this truck downhill backwards if he really wanted to.
This is the story of when an old soul
met a young soul.
They’re never going to forget one another.
so hesitant to watch this.
just get a very slow burn sappy love story vibe from this.

not really sappy and the film is more about infatuation than love in my opinion (although I suppose the two are intertwined quite often)

Personally it's one of my favorites of 2021...I'm a big PTA fan but didn't really care for Phantom Thread so this was a nice return for me...I talked about it earlier in here too but it's an interesting study of infatuation and attraction (not necessarily just sexual either like many in here are jumping to conclusions about)...great soundtrack and I thought the actors all did a really good job as well considering a few of them were newcomers...I'm looking forward to giving it another watch and definitely recommend it...also feels like a love letter to that time period while also saying "probably a good idea a lot of this s*** doesn't fly anymore"

ngl I think people are overlooking that factor. Like even with the restaurant owner, he was portrayed to be a moron yet people thought this movie was.. anti-asian or some s***
These songs have become every day spins. Thank you PTA
That Nina Simone song is just perfect.
And then the way she was asking if anyone wanted a mirror reminded me of the scene in The Master where the girl is walking around showing off her dress.

ngl I was bored for about an hour and a half but somehow it hit me in the last 20 minutes how nice this movie is. might need to eventually rewatch.
Mans such a geezer for not putting this on streaming. The potential audience he couldve got if this was on netflix...
Only ppl who are gonna see it is ppl who already know and like him
Even if it does go on streaming its not a proper premiere so it wont get as much hype as it couldve

So was the mistaken identity a reference to Hitch and the campaign stalker Taxi Driver?
