bro just watch the movie
or move to a better city
Bro go watch it again but FT me so I can see too
After seeing most of PTA’s movies I expected something heavy here, but it’s pretty calm plotted. Really nice and warm movie. Enjoyed it even tho it doesn’t feel very ambitious
Bro go watch it again but FT me so I can see too
I will when I see red rocket next Tuesday or Wednesday
eh i mean ur 20s to me is like a second stage of coming of age and discovering your passions in life, kinda like that pete davidson movie that came out last year king of staten island where he’s still tryna get his s*** together
Yeah I feel like her arc was much more interesting even though she was kinda f***ed up. But the game is the game
Nigga I’m trying to!!! Even went to the movies today to support a black film and seen a Licorice pizza poster talking bout “coming soon”…..fuckin lies
bro arent you in NY lol it's playing here
(my bad if you're not)

I get your point. Idk I think the movie overall didn’t sit right with me because it didn’t give me any reason to give a s*** about either of our leads during any point. On top of that, the majority of the scenes had me asking myself “what was the point?” Like what was the point of Bradley Cooper’s character aside from some humor? They just leave his character behind like nothing. Same with introducing Bennie Safdie’s character. I just didn’t appreciate the abruptness of everything if you get me
as for not liking the leads that's how you felt so I won't argue with that...I found them likeable enough but I could see how others maybe wouldn't...Bradley Cooper's scene was a) for humor and b) to showcase how Alana was growing tired of Gary's s***...she's clearly into Jon Peters at least a little bit (throughout the movie she seems to be aiming for a husband that'll take care of her needs rather than someone she's truly in love with) but because she's part of Gary's crew she ends up going along with his antics...then has to bail them out in the end with her driving skills (they mention earlier how Gary can't drive at least at that point)...basically it's her noticing that she probably is too old to be hanging out with these guys...same with Penn and the politician dude...she was intending to become their girl so that she's married to someone who can at least take care of her needs bc she thinks that's what a woman is supposed to aim for...constantly those attempts blow up in her face though and she ends back up with Gary (he also tries to move on from her numerous times)...arguing about the necessity for Cooper's scene is like arguing the necessity of the Alfred Molina scene in Boogie Nights lol
Damn interesting feedback bro. What structureless films do you like? So I can get a gauge of what might of been off.
The example in the spoiler you gave doesn’t seem tooo bad to me, just because that’s human nature. We contradict ourselves all the time with no solid reason as to why sometimes. So maybe that’s what PTA was going for? Obviously I’m just making a blind assumption and can’t fully weigh in until I see it for myself.
let's see.. off the top of my head, i loved C'mon C'mon (as you already know lol), i enjoyed Boyhood, and thought The Florida Project and Lost in Translation had some great elements even though they had their flaws

ahh i see. Yeah the leads being unlikable still remains for me lol but this opened up a new perspective for me ngl. I just think there are love stories that have been done way better but at least I can see what PTA was going for now
I don't really get some of the other critiques I've been seeing regarding their age difference and the white dude doing the Japanese voice...regarding the age thing it's not like the film shows them having s***at any point...she shows him her t*** and they kiss at the end of the film after some years have passed and he's probably closer to 17-18 by then...as for the Japanese impression it clearly shows his (first) wife looking uncomfortable with him doing that voice and the 2nd time you see him and he does it again Gary and Alana just kind of laugh awkwardly...if the audience laughed it says more about them...it's both a love letter to that time period while also displaying that a lot of the s*** ppl did back then wasn't cool

Lol y’all gotta stop saying “I mean they didn’t show em have sex”
If you wouldn’t do the same actions with a 15 year old chick then that says something.

I feel you but I also don't think it was condoning her doing that lol given their prior conversation it makes sense why she does it and she slaps him when he asks if he can touch them...I'm just saying there are clearly boundaries set up and she's clearly put off by the age difference between them throughout the film...ppl making it out like she's creepin on him are going a bit far
Can finally check out this thread lmao. It’s a 3.5/5 for me. Enjoyed it but after recently rewatching phantom thread and boogie nights I guess my expectations were too high. I enjoyed a lot about the movie but I think the way it wrapped up just left some to be desired
I feel like a rewatch will probably put the score higher though, I tend to with his movies

I agree w this

Because they arent actual critiques, its whining
Also just watched it in theaters yesterday, the japanese parts had the white people in the theater laughing, it felt very fitting. It was of the time but the audience laughing makes you remember that attitudes havent changed all that much, its just not done overtly anymore
Great movie, it felt like it was filmed around “we cant display anything sexual between a child and an adult”.
Entire movie is buildup for the final scene

yeah if it didn't close in on dude's wife looking uncomfortable with him doing the voice...or Gary and Alana awkwardly laughing when he does it the 2nd time in his restaurant (with a new, younger Asian wife which also displays how shallow that dude is) then maybe those complaints would be valid...you also see plenty of examples of sexism (Alana gets smacked on the ass by a director in the first 10 mins of the film) and then homophobia with the politician...basically it's saying "yeah those times were pretty great...except for some of the not so great stuff...acknowledge both"
had the film shown or even hinted at those two characters fooling around sexually any more than her showing him her t*** briefly I'd take issue with it too...they're basically just friends with an undeniable connection that keeps pulling them back into each others lives and yes in the end they embrace and kiss but by that point I assumed he was at least 17 or 18 as it seemed there was at least a bit of a time jump...before that she's desperately looking for older men to shack up with and isn't interested in Gary at all sexually...so yeah some of these "takes" are just weird and reaching
The scene in phantom thread where alma wants to throw a surprise dinner for reynolds is so deeply uncomfortable
waiting for him to arrive is so tense, knowing he’ll hate every moment of it
“If I don’t protect myself someone will come in the middle of the night, and take over my corner of the room and ask me about their f***ing asparagus’

wait so the ending is a time skip?

not necessarily but I just mean it seems throughout the film there are little jumps in time...basically I don't think Gary's 15 through the whole thing...the jump to Sean Penn's scene seems like there had been some time that had passed and eventually Gary starts driving and smoking so idk
