I just recently moved to DC and have family that's lived here for decades. They said COVID f***ed everything up. It's believable.

Where I moved from is a tourist city, and quite literally the homelessness has raised something like 1200% after COVID. Crime went up about 900% too.

I agree with you that, yes, there's always been bad parts of cities that people generally stay out of. However it's gotten really bad and isn't contained in just one part of town anymore (for most cities) at least.
