What were the metal balls in the dolls ??
The writer claims there’s a defined method to what’s happening with that but says he won’t reveal further – probably bull imo but those are definitely their brains, literally/symbolically/metaphorically(?)
The way the forensics guy (amazing bit character) puts it, the balls are a conduit for thoughts/ emotion and give off diff forms of energy we can measure, but if you cut them in half it’s not gonna tell you anything about that, much like a real brain. The movie makes it seem like the dolls with balls are routers for Satan’s Wifi signal, letting him connect with your mind and influence you
i hate jump scares twin
especially cheap ones like the ones in Smile
u read about it ? or something

I don't think those are necessarily what it has its more of a slowly coming on scary than a jump
they like... ease in

theres so much of this type stuff that just has no explanation really
and i feel like the movie could have used more substance if its going to rehash a lot of already established tropes
You misspelt ass
If we had good taste we wouldn't be in the Longlegs thread
u read about it ? or something
i watched a few of them on youtube
the sound design of the movie goes crazy tho
i will probably watch it right before the sequel

I'll be honest Smile blows Longlegs out of the water
substance wise especially
Aesthetically longlegs was nice. the dialogue flowed well and the acting was solid.
But I got issues with the writing and concept. So many different things are hinted at and not developed at ALL and i don't think those are things u can just chalk up to "Its for the audience to decide" thatd have to be the biggest cop out for such a nothingburger movie.
Damn. hatin above ^
and below v
Meaningless and lazy you really have to project a lot onto this basic s\*\*\* to make it more than it is. And it sucks because the potential is there with the actual visuals, actors, and the feeling of the movie itself. Theres a lot that DID go right in this movie. But not enough for me personally. I could still probably throw it on in the background for the aesthetic in the future but not to mentally engage with the movie in any capacity

the concept behind Smile goes crazy IMO but i love mental health related horror in general
Longlegs falls flat for me in the last 15ish min but i feel like a lot of my grievances with it are due to the way it's marketed and not the content of the movie itself so it's unfair for me to make critiques

The marketing makes it look so much better than it is imo. I didn't see any of it until after i watched it
That being said I'm being a hater and don't want 2 s*** on people that like the movie
Carter scolding Harker after Longlegs killed himself was funny
She’s just hyperventilating, and he’s like goddamnit
Got to admire Monroe’s performance more and how good it was on second watch
Felt like she was going for a mix of Kristen Stewart and Rami Malek
It's not perfect, and I was afraid the Nic Cage/Longlegs reveal in the 2nd act would be too goofy going forward, but I really liked this movie. The atmosphere and dread it strikes makes for a fun ride. Maika Monroe, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, and Kiernan Shipka were all fantastic.
Alright I just watched this for a second time and f*** ya’ll that be hating this s*** is great still
Only thing I can say is that sure the marketing was leading this on to be super scary and to an extent I can see why people say it isn’t. Also this movie doesn’t reinvent the wheel but puts a twist on a thriller/horror/crime movie. Whatever you wanna call it but seeing this again helped for sure.
It was great going in blind the first time and the second time around further piecing it together and catching things I may have missed before. This movie has great cinematography and acting plus personally I have no issue with the pacing of it. I think this movie is still great and has replay value even though the plot is not anything massively complex.
I still think this is a 9/10 for what it is and I enjoyed it both times. If you don’t I get it and can understand whatever grievances you might have. I just think people expected more/something else than what it was and have been let down by that.
Movie was better on rewatch
Although it’s still wrought with problems, the investigative side of it was pretty underwhelming as I feel like a lot of the clues would be pretty obvious
Similar to another movie I have mixed feelings about, Prisoners
As a huge fan of police procedurals and satanic s***, this was just way too mild and muddy

what about that expositional monologue at the end that grinds the movie to a halt
what about that expositional monologue at the end that grinds the movie to a halt
For a movie a little over 90 minutes i’ll take it over dragging it out another 15-20 minutes past the 2 hour mark just to only have people say “this could have been shorter”
Given the barebones concept of FBI solving a case as the main premise of the movie

yea i guess so bro. Hereditary is pushing 2 hours and no one says its "too long." expositional monologue to me, was used so cheaply in this movie as a "this is what my movie is about" button.
entirely lost interest as the plot machinations got hella convoluted through a poorly written thesis.
