Microsoft says there's positions for ALL of the OpenAI employees should they choose to join.

Since Sam is most likely not coming back to OpenAI, Most of the OpenAI team will most likely just migrate to Microsoft's new division.

    This sounds illegal

So what does this mean for Open AI

It means that OpenAI is in danger.

All of it's best workers will leave.

Hard to reach your goals as a company when you don't have the right talent.

Wtf bruh. This looks like there's some evil business s*** going on. Microsoft is not looking out for our best interest with AI

    This was inevitable.

Elon, Sam, Sutskever, Brockman, and others created OpenAI to be a nonprofit.

However, it created another subsidiary that was for profit and got backed by a billion dollar company like Microsoft.

That was the nail in the coffin. You can't be a nonprofit and move like a startup trying to make money.

As soon as Microsoft got involved, things got complicated. Because now there's conflict of interest and not everyone is aligned.

Microsoft is doing what exactly it's suppose to as a company, which is to be at the forefront of AI and generate profits by helping users.

Are your saying Sam and the rest wanted OpenAI to stay as a non profit? Doesn't that philosophy go out the window again by now deciding to join one of the biggest corporations in the world?

Microsoft has a 49% stake in OpenAI. They don't own all of it but they have a major influence.

OpenAI is suppose to be a nonprofit and is cautious about the use and monetization of AI.

Sam Altman has been aggressive on trying to use AI and raise capital. The board didn't like that and fired him without consulting Microsoft.

So the CEO of Microsoft just created a new division so he can let Sam and his right hand man work without constraint and worrying about the board. And it looks like the OpenAI team dont trust the board and want to just jump ship to Microsoft's new division.

TLDR: Microsoft basically acquired OpenAI for free. This new OpenAI under Microsoft will move like a startup trying to make money.

Which if you’re the board of OAI worried about commercialization of agi this is the worst possible situation, if they cared about safety they would resign

Why do people care about any of this

Artificial Intelligence is gonna be very important to society, especially Artificial General Intelligence.

Who is in charge of it and how they use it is important.

Depending on how AI is used in the future, what's happening here could be a monumental moment in history.

    It's already happening..

You're already exposed to things that are using AI.

AI is in early stage. Now that billion dollars are being spent on it, you're going to see more innovation.

Artificial General Intelligence is highly autonomous systems that outperform humans. This is what people are mostly concerned with.

Well I know Elon probably wanted it to stay as nonprofit but as soon as Microsoft got involved, there was a conflict.

I don't know what exactly happened that caused the shift but I think the success and adoption of ChatGPT by the masses changed everything.

Since then there's been a division in OpenAI about it's nonprofit vs profit goals and how it's used.

You are seeing things play out in real time.
