I love everything about the power up and the fun meta elements of it except for the context for why Luffy has it. Changing the name of the fruit and everything around that I can’t stand. Just totally contradicts what I love about the series. All the One Piece YouTubers blowing Oda over this like it’s the greatest thing ever reeks of their financial incentives to avoid negativity surrounding the manga. Only person I’m seeing criticizing this in any sophisticated way is the channel BestGuyEver.

Ehh, saying 700 chapters is kinda misleading cause time moves differently in One Piece. 700 chapters makes it sound like Luffy's been on the grandline for over 20 years causing havoc when in their world he's only been active for like two and a half years. This comment says Luffy's only been a known entity for 7 or 8 months.

The fruit has been dormant for 800 years, who would have expected a 19 yr old kid to awaken it so shortly after arriving on the scene?

Robin has had her fruit and been on the WG's radar for over 20 years and they weren't able to do anything about her and her fruit still isn't awakened (if it is, it hasn't been specifically stated). Aokiji was protecting her in the same way that Garp and Shanks may have been protecting Luffy.

There's still a bunch of questions that need to be answered but I feel like the precedent has been set that the WG and Elders are not above being influenced by other forces. We still have no idea what Shanks told the elders and what role Garp is set to play in this whole thing. It's very possible that one, or both of them had the ability to stop or slow down the Elder's pursuit of Luffy.

Now if it ends up being because "they forgot :P" then yeah it would be fair to call it an ass pull but I doubt Oda would provide such a simple answer to one of the most pivotal questions in the series.
