wsws had an article on the 1970 leroy crash and subsequent 2011 chemical breach but it is mysteriously gone now, gonna check and see if it was archived.

basically what happened was a train derailed which spilled cyanide and trichloroethylene around the area, the railroad company initially tried to inundate the crash site with water which led to all the wells around the site to be contaminated. the EPA eventually did a cleanup in the early 1980s but like idiots they pumped the chemicals into metal barrels which they left at the site of the accident and never removed. 30 years later the barrels rusted, the chemicals leeched back into the water supply and a bunch of girls got exposed to it which led to weird neurodegenerative symptoms. Erin Brockivich eventually got involved and it was a pretty big deal locally. today the area remains a Superfund site.
