this was my favourite album that came out the past friday. i wouldn't say its an aoty contender but its quite good. the 70s glam rock and funk/soul elements are nice but at times it starts to sound like background music

Even if I’m conflicted on St. Vincent’s progression from S/T onward, songs like At The Holiday Part remind me of why I loved her in the first place.

Initial impressions are that this is a more comfortable, less self-conscious album than Masseduction, but I came to appreciate that albums manic streak disguised in art pop. It’s a lot messier, but that almost works in its favor. Some songs here end up feeling too languid for their own good, and the title track especially stretches the limits of what can be accomplished with Annie trying to draw inspiration from her father’s incarceration without ever really interrogating it.

    Favorite songs are

    At The Holiday Party
    The Melting of the Sun
    The Laughing Man
    Live In The Dream

It took me three years to come around on Masseduction after being an avid St. Vincent fan from the Strange Mercy era, so hopefully the same thing happens with Daddy’s Home. I just wish Annie came back down to earth instead of layering more artifice into each album.

A big reason I’ve enjoyed these past two albums more than S/T is because the songwriting is more vulnerable regardless of how it might be presented. S/T is great, but it’s always felt too aloof and austere in places. Something like Severed Crossed Fingers does nothing for me, while Smoking Section is devastating.

The more I sit with this album, the more I like it.

But with singles like Pay Your Way in Pain and Melting of the Sun, I really didn't expect Daddy's Home to be so melancholy and subdued. This feels like less of a carefree exploration of the 70s and more like a hyperaware self-reflection from someone who is just coming to terms with how the last few years have passed by.

i actually checked this album out after not really caring for her recent stuff and it might be a sleeper album of the year

the prod is so well done i wish somebody could get this album into rocky or lana or kevin parkers hands and see what it inspires

they hit her up like “hey St. Vincent, your album is painfully mediocre, but how would you feel about headlining our festival?”

lmfao if you like Masseduction better than s/t you’ve definitely got recency bias or just extremely trash taste

there’s no song on Masseduction that is better than any song on s/t
