An FBI Special Agent was turning members of this org into informants who then planned the crimes (bomb making recipes, targets, etc). The ones who weren't turned are the ones being prosecuted for the crimes, and they are arguing entrapment. It's not uncommon that headline crimes like this are heavily orchestrated by the feds.

For example, there's a very plausible argument that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an informant. Whether he went rogue to do the Boston Marathon Bombing or not is kind of beside the point if he was protected by the feds and put in the position to go rogue like that.

I feel you. I mean, US politics have always been one step forward, two steps back. For instance if the Dems can pass their $3.5-trillion 'human infrastructure' bill this fall, that'll be a huge step forward.
