In Detroit, Grant will reunite with Troy Weaver, the team's general manager who overlapped with Grant in Oklahoma City from 2016-19 Both individuals have Syracuse roots as Weaver was an assistant coach for the Orange from 2000-04, recruiting Carmelo Anthony -- another forward from Maryland -- to Central New York before experiencing the team's 2003 national championship.

"We go way back," Grant said of Weaver. "It impacted (my decision) a lot. Just our relationship, it's definitely a trust thing there. I trust him. He trusts me. So it played a big, big impact on my decision."

Weaver said adding Grant was his top priority in free agency. He believes Grant's ability to defend multiple positions at a high level defensively, as well as his budding offensive game, makes him a smart investment.

"He's just hitting his prime," Weaver said. "We're excited about everything he brings to the table as a young man and as a young player."
