Anyone care to tell me how you approach making a beat from scratch? Do you have a formula. Is your approach dependent on the type of genre you're trying to replicate?

I usually just pick a random key, get a chord progression down, then a melody, then bass, then drums. Get a nice 8 bar loop going then duplicate it a bunch of times and starting removing and adding as the beat progressives
Sometimes I do bass first, or melody. Sometimes I just straight up steal structures from songs. I don’t think I ever do drums first tho

I know the C major and G major scales as well their chords. do use just look up chord progressions or have formula to make them?
If I hum a melody I’m not musically incline to transcribe to notes so I’m f***ed. When I try to play around I don’t get much. As far as bass is it always just root notes to chords no matter if 808s or other?
I guess I can just look at drum patterns and eventually have my own style.
How would one go bass first?
I hate to asking so many questions by it’s scary to put time in and not get far because you’re lost in the dark.

My ableton push has a scale feature and I just blindly pick one lol. I’m not that great at pencilling so I play by feel, esp for melodies I feel I get more emotion with my push 2. Yea generally my bass just follows the chord roots. For 808s too sometimes but not always necessary for 808s. Like some beats don’t even got chords it’s just a melody and drums.
The only time I do bass first is like for a bass driven track where I want the bass line to be the main attraction. Bass be driving songs a lot so just a rhythm and groove going if that’s what you wanna start with first

personally, my approach is relative to however I feel that moment, hour of the day. If I feel like starting a beat from a sample first, then that's what I'll do. If I wanna start it off with an 808 or a drumbreak, then that's what it's gonna be and I just build from there.
As cliche as it sounds, the greatest advice one can give, is just do whatever you feel is right at that moment. Don't try to chase something because when you try to do that or replicate, that's when the doubt and the block happens. You probably are not as lost in the dark as you think you are ( @polaroid )
I’m getting closer to sharing some of my work. I’ve been doing this for 6 years and just haven’t had the courage to put stuff out there.
