One day I had a breakdown and just hit the road. I drove from Georgia to Texas. I didn’t sleep. I hit the road around 11 p.m., intending to drive to North Carolina and then New York, but I decided on Texas instead. I almost fell asleep behind the wheel several times. When day broke, I was in Mississippi and stopped to grab some coffee.

I pulled onto a dirt road—the kind of road a single woman from the city probably wouldn’t feel comfortable on. I went into the station and found a crowd: a polite mixed-race woman working the counter, and Black and white men preparing for the workday.

I grabbed my coffee and left, caught off guard by how peaceful it all felt. Maybe it was because I was coming down from an episode and had gotten zero sleep, but they seemed content with their circumstances. This was one of the poorest and least-educated places in the country, yet there was something about the scene that felt settled and peaceful.

how can you extrapolate that people are "content with their circumstances" based on going into a gas station

does the narrator expect them to be visibly miserable or freaking out nonstop because theyre in one of the poorest and least educated places?

The men where chatting over coffee, women at work
The young men outside working on their old American v6’s all in morning light was something to experience
