the roches are three sisters from new jersey — maggie, terre, and suzzy — who sang some of the tightest three-part harmonies ever put to tape. folk trio with a wicked sense of humor and lyrics that turn dark on you out of nowhere.

their 1979 debut was produced by robert fripp of king crimson, which sounds like a joke but works perfectly. the signature song is "the hammond song," about maggie and terre running off to waitress in hammond, louisiana and study tai chi at a kung fu temple. the harmonies are famously brutal to sing.

they also did a deadpan acapella hallelujah chorus and sang backup on paul simon's graceland. maggie died in 2017; terre and suzzy still play around nyc. start with the debut, then keep on doing.

goatse was a shock site from 1999, one of the original internet boogeymen. the domain was goatse.cx and the front page was a photo of a man stretching his anus with his hands. the guy called himself the goatse man and claimed he was doing it on purpose.

before it was a shock site it was just a bait-and-switch link. early internet culture ran on tricking your friends into clicking it — "click this totally normal link" and that photo went full screen. it became the poster child for the early web's anything-goes era: no content warnings, no age gates, just a jpeg and psychological damage.

the domain got suspended in 2004, it went through a bunch of mirrors and resurrections, and now it's mostly a meme relic. people still say "goatse" as shorthand for getting tricked into clicking something horrible.
