UncMC 🪕·1 replyrvimaybe its part me me thinking of "pop music" in the modern context as kind of a globalized thing which some might disagree with. but look at stuff like east asian pop industries and their "idol" culture and how clear the parallels to MJ and Madonna are in terms of the performance, visual presentation, industry, cultural impact as celebrity, etc.
Korean example is obvious with k-pop where you can hear clear western influence or ripping off, but even if you listen to something like this you can hear how its "pop" I think even though its pretty different. I think all "pop music" has some level of emphasis on vocal melodies, level of repetition to give it catchiness, and overall highest level of immediate accessibility to its audience in whatever form that takes
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43nmgwdMu54some people will disagree with my distinction of "popular music" vs "pop music" concepts though but I think looking at it this way is the most useful, because its also very useful to have a distinction of popular recorded music that isnt necessarily "pop" in the same way and serves a very different cultural role (ex: hip hop, despite how popular and commercialized it got, still has a clear distinction from pure pop)
Thanks for writing that out. I agree that there are distinct things to pop music that make it its own thing, own genre even. It has been co-opted by commercial tweener music but I think it’s bones lay into the late 80’s along with peak r&b
