i agree that when you share things with a community you open yourself up to those 3 things and that they are common motives for sharing things. and that theyre largely detrimental.

but theyre not the only motives and theres many more, both good and bad. I dont think its accurate to reduce exchanging things others in a community, art or otherwise, to only those 3 things.

Such a fun way to learn though when you can blow it up with no repercussions I did that last year, spent almost a whole weekend designing the network but it was a ton of fun.

I want to get into homelabbing and self hosting just haven’t gotten around to it yet

i think they all apply in the sense that once its out there are people in a community will almost always view things from that lense. the only way you could avoid all 3 of those things applying is by sharing it with such a small group of likeminded people who dont look at things that way. which is uncommon and impraticable in most examples. Theres just more reasons ontop of them.

but people could share something to promote an agenda or propaganda. which i think is distinct from virtue signalling.

they could share something just to profit themsleves, which is is distinct from class signaling. you could do this with a relatively invaluable thing and have no money while doing it.

people could share something, in a very pure sense of, this is something i like and i have a lot in common with this group of people, they will probably also like it. and i enjoy the exchange.
maybe it changed their perspective on something, or moved them etc.

you could share something simply because you think its so awful people would enjoy seeing it. which is guess you could loosely argue is virtue signalling, but i do think they’re different even if theres some overlap

They could do it because it has something people can learn from, like a novel technique, or resource, or piece of art

They could do it because theyre bored and are morbidly curious how people will react to things

just off the top of my head. those are all equally valid motifs for sharing things in a community that are distinct enough to qualify as seperate reasons

Sharing things just because you think they are nice - very rare but is possible. I think you would have to be naive to feel as though this compares to the other three

Sharing that something is awful - this is either peacocking your level of knowledge (you know it is bad so you must also know what is good) or pushing a cause (look at how bad this thing is instead of this good thing you should like instead)

Sharing of a technique/something people can learn from - you are using it to show how knowledgeable you are

Just doing something because you're bored - unfair because in an abstract way this applies to every thing

and you can look at sharing something awful in the same way as sharing something you enjoy. simply that it brought u joy that it was done in a certain way and u want other people to get a kick out of it. I dont think everyone’s psychology is literally like “This will show them how much i know, because i dislike this thing!”

the boring thing, i think it being an abstract thing that applies to everything makes it legit. You could make the same argument about saying that people do everything purely out of self interest falls in the same category of “vague abstract concept that can apply to everything to the point where it loses meaning”

I don't think it's a conscious decision people are making. I think it's just how all interactions work without you actively deciding to make them work that way

i think people do frequently interact with eachother that way, espcialy in informal, friendly settings and small groups of friends or communities. but when you scale it up to large groups and how powerful people in society interact, it falls away steeply. and thats what mostly visible
