You gotta be tasteful about it but it's def game + console + screen type dependant. No need to upscale to 8x in most cases, but 2x to 4x is usually perfect imo

I don't need them to look like modern games, just not a smeary pixelated mess

For example, DS games look phenomenal upscaled, I'd say it's a necessity if you're playing on a screen any bigger than the OG DS

I feel that way about people who crank their s*** up to 120fps, but 60fps feels like the sweet spot to me. Not smooth enough to feel unnatural, but not as nearly as jank as 30fps.

My philosophy is that I want my retro games to look like they looked to me when I played them as a kid

As a kid, I was playing on tiny screens and crt tvs. playing these games at their original resolution on modern hardware will look nothing like that, so the best I can do is mildly upscale so they look normal on a big OLED screen

So upscaling to restore some of the smoothness that the originals achieved with small screens and old tv tech is my method of choice
