Apr 8, 2023·2 repliesAllison WanderlandWhen did this start happening? Em puts an emphasis on stacking words together more than structuring songs and catchy hooks like he used to. Instead of trying to prove he's a crazy technician and wordsmith, like we don't already know that, why not prove that you can still write quality songs and craft good albums? The world would lose if it he just collaborates with producers we want and go back to his former style.
It’s kind of hard to pinpoint but it started around MMLP2. That album was still pretty smooth and he was still making great songs but the technicality was definitely taking more of a spotlight. The “choppy flow” started around this time.
Then on Shady XV it took a nosedive and the dude started going overboard with the technical rhyming which continued until Revival where he s*** the bed completely.
He bounced back a little from Revival with Kamikaze and the flows became a bit better but then he became obsessed with how fast he could spit and it’s gotten worse since 2018. You’ll get an occasional song that has the heart of old Em like Darkness, but those are seldom.
I think it’s a combination of feeling like he’s letting down people if he isn’t going a mile a minute on a technical front and also him just getting bored and having mastered his previous style. Also not having s*** to talk about and his voice getting damaged during the Recovery era.

Rap god taking off made em hyper fixated on that and think he needed his rhymes more compacted and together
He probably also heard a lot of triplet flows, so he wanted to do his own take on it
Like how he was hating on choppy flows on the ringer or something, I don’t remember
