i reread the trade. it def is incomplete and setting up a larger story. when i first read it i read like 2 or 3 trades back to back so i got a much more resolved story.

but i stand by that this is a masterclass comic. the art is some of the best ive seen in a comic. not just because it has a unique and distinct art style, which is does. and one that suits the tone of the story. but generally speaking i dont care too much about art styles in general, id rather something be done very well than something be unique for the sake of being unique.

but this is done extremely well, regardless of its uniqueness. the clarity in how the story flows from panel to panel is some of the best ive ever seen in a comic. It’s like watching a movie, theres no confusion of what panel flows into what, or reading what text bubble in what order. it is perfect. you can picture entire scenes in your head. the pages use all the space available, the rhythm and variety in panel layouts. the composition of the panels. I think it’s the strongest aspect of the comic and one of the best examples of doing it that well in any comic.

theres no deep meaning or anything. its just a really fun, pretty gross comic. but its so stylized and original the gross stuff doesnt bother me, because it needs to exist to serve the plot. its not like gross for the sake of it.

what I love so much about the story, is that its like 3 or 4 unique ideas that are interesting enough you could make stories out of them by themselves. A pandemic caused by the bird flu that makes chicken illegal (this was written years before covid btw lol which is kinda cool). you could easily fit a quality tv show within that universe. then you have this guy that gets to relive the lives of everything he eats. also totally orignal idea you could base a series around. then youre going to have him eating people to solve murders lol its so whacky. THEN you have him meet this girl who can describe food so realistically you can taste it and he falls in love with her. and in later issues they introduce like 3 or 4 more of these very original concepts that are interesting enough to base whole series around.

its like they stuck 3 or 4 comics worth of idea into a single series. then had the artistry to deliver on the idea.

it reminds me of how arrested development has like more jokes per minute than any other show. theres always a few jokes happening at the same time. they could easily have turned 1 season into 3 or more worth and it still be a great show.
