the methods u guys use to learn languages kills me as an outsider

like "waiting to speak" is hilarious

im learning to play guitar but im gonna spend 1000 hours just listening to the guitar before i touch the instrument

u right, there is a bit of a point but a lot of people like on reddit take it too far

Different skills with different learning processes

seems like the facts 100% are on the side of listening input being very very important for language learning. no debate there been known

but the 'waiting to speak so you dont fossilize' type stuff... the 'this is the same way you learned you native language!' people...doesnt seem as based in facts...

Yeah kids babble and copy their way to language speaking

I think a large part of like blocks adults face is having a fully formed ego that doesn’t like to f*** up and put themselves out there unabashedly

    Kids don’t have that

It’s something made up by a lot of grifters tbh

The doctor that they reference says that you’ll eventually improve with time and input

Speak when you want but he says group identity is what prevents people from getting a native accent, because they feel “embarrassed” to force an accent

the narrative that the diehards run with takes that a***ogy to a point where it doesnt make sense IMO

    yeah the immersion is key

but also kids get reinforcement from their parents constantly when they are speaking. and exactly like you say, when they start speaking they barely know any words. the purists act like babies learn almost fully natively the language and then only start speaking

Well they still have that amount of hours constantly being immersed and hearing the sounds and words of the language
