That’s a really good question — and it’s not just pop psychology; there’s actually some solid neuroscience behind why rewatching familiar shows, movies, or videos can be soothing for your nervous system.

    Here’s a breakdown of why:

🧠 1. Predictability calms the nervous system

Your brain loves predictability — it makes you feel safe.
When you rewatch something, you already know what’s going to happen, so there’s no uncertainty or threat.

This reduces activation in the amygdala, the part of the brain that scans for danger.

It allows the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” system) to take over, slowing heart rate and lowering stress hormones.

Result: your body literally relaxes because nothing unexpected can go wrong.

💬 2. Familiar stories provide emotional regulation

When you rewatch a comforting show, your brain reactivates positive emotional memories associated with it — kind of like re-listening to a favorite song.

You anticipate jokes, resolutions, or comforting character moments, which boosts dopamine (anticipation/reward) and oxytocin (social bonding).

This can recreate the feeling of emotional safety and stability.

🛋️ 3. It provides gentle stimulation without overwhelm

New media can demand a lot of cognitive energy — new faces, plots, sounds, moral tension.
Familiar content, on the other hand, engages you just enough to be pleasant, but not enough to trigger vigilance or stress responses.
That’s why people often rewatch their “comfort shows” when anxious, sick, or emotionally tired.

❤️ 4. It taps into attachment and nostalgia

If the show or movie is tied to positive times in your life (like watching a childhood favorite), it can evoke a sense of continuity and belonging.
This sense of emotional grounding helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, stabilizing mood and stress responses.

    🧩 In short:

    Rewatching something familiar =
    ➡️ Predictable + safe + emotionally rewarding
    ➡️ Less cortisol, more dopamine/oxytocin
➡️ Nervous system downshifts into a regulated, calm state

Would you like me to explain how to use rewatching intentionally as part of stress regulation or grounding (like a nervous system tool)?

Unfortunately my viewing of One Battle wasn't as expected

the IMAX I went to has uncomfortable chairs and the sound wasn't great either. I'm waiting for my second viewing, at home, before I rate it

Also, I wasn't a big fan of the massive IMAX screen.. It wasn't so easy to get a grasp of and appreciate the framing, and I found myself having to turn my head and evaluate what I'm to focus on

I kinda liked having a screen so giant I had to turn my head. I got really lucky got to see it at a “real” 70mm imax location so it was incredibly impressive. I think he filmed with a wide lens bc even when I saw it in “liemax” I had to turn my head at times
