You can but it’s not as simple as hdd/sdd swapping on pcs since memory is soldered

On modern Apple computers, you generally cannot upgrade the storage after purchase.

MacBooks (Air, Pro) – Since around 2016, Apple solders the SSD directly onto the logic board. That means you can’t swap it out later like you could with older laptops.

Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio, Mac Pro – Most current models also have soldered or proprietary SSD modules. Even the Mac Pro (Apple’s most “modular” desktop) uses proprietary storage that isn’t user-replaceable in the normal sense.

Older Macs (pre-2016 laptops, older iMacs, some Mac minis) often allowed drive upgrades, but Apple moved away from that.

So when you buy a Mac today, you’re stuck with the storage tier you choose at checkout. That’s a big part of why people accuse Apple of “price gouging” – they charge hundreds of dollars more for upgrades (e.g. $200 for 512GB → 1TB), while a comparable NVMe SSD in the market costs far less.
