Chance kinda played himself by pretending coloring book was a mixtape for some reason

That was a successful project and could have been looked at as his debut album following a beloved mixtape

Instead he lied, then had a sophomore slump which is pretty normal, and it made the whole thing look 10x as bad

He treated 10 Day-Acid Rap-Coloring Book as a trilogy, that’s why it was a mixtape I believe.

Bro was totally capable of dropping a good debut album back then, he just let the Kanye co-sign get to his head and believed he couldn’t do any wrong and then learned the hard way that announcing your debut album is going to drop 4 months later and not having a single song recorded yet was a bad idea.

His old manager had even begged him not to drop it and told him straight up it was bad material, and Chance didn’t listen. They ended up falling out over it.

That's still foolish though. Even if it was part of a trilogy it still could have been released as an album. The publics perception of him would be much much better if he did that.

Coloring book - Grammy award winning critically acclaimed commercially successful

It's probably the biggest mistake of his entire career. Dropping that as a mixtape gave people unreasonable expectations for what his album was actually going to be.

I don’t think the classification of it really made much of a difference on how the project was perceived overall, considering mixtapes at that point weren’t looked at as inferior at that point in 2016 just based off classification

Chances biggest mistake was scrapping all the material he had been recording from 2016-2018 for a debut album, material we heard in 2018 that was actually pretty good for the s*** that came out in 2019 when he was lovestruck and peaking ego wise.

You're missing the point

It's not about how it changed the perception of the project itself, it's about how it changed the perception of the big day

A sophomore slump is a lot easier to handle then a debut you have been hyping up for years that people end up disliking
