There’s artists out there who were massively successful that weren’t “album artists”, and he was never gonna be one of them. Does that take some points off the board artistically? Yeah but it doesn’t take away from the entertainment/star aspect, which is the overwhelming factor.

It was 100% the controversy over the years that put a ceiling on his career. Unfortunately America (and let’s be honest, most of the world) still carries prejudice, and at the end of the day, he was just another black man who fit a negative stereotype to them. He wasn’t ever going to be given the luxury of f***ing up tremendously and being allowed to move on from it like Morgan Wallen, who has a white American fanbase who probably insults black people behind closed doors.
