from what little I read about it on twitter, Pharrell tried to register the Neptunes as a brand or whatever solely to himself. Chad found out, and wanted to sue bc.. yeah. then Pharrell and team tried to include him in ownership of the name, but Chad was apparently done with him and sued him anyway.
It was from a thread about how Pharrell did something similarly shady to Kellis, in the early 2000's, so do know I got the info from folk who were already jumping against Pharrell, it may be biased

So Pharrell tried to snake Chad
Chad got mad
Pharrell after the fact tried to include him because he realized he couldn't get away with it
Chad said no and still tried to sue him for being a jerk
This sounds like it could be reasonable. Pharrell doesn't sound like an amazing guy.
