I think the whole they already know everything about us angle is like a psyop put out and promoted by these companies to make people more complacent. I guess thats kinda a conspiracy but thats what i think.People used to be so concerned about this stuff 15 years ago and now if you care people make fun of you.
People should be discerning with what they use but it will only change when the government mandates encryption and makes buying selling data like that illegal. Which wont happen for a long time.
And society becoming more reliant on a lot of these redundant technologies that do nothing to benefit people other than taking your data is a problem too i also kinda have a similar conspiracy theory view on.

I could rather die than use itits kinda wild to me how people recognize how powerful the tiktok algorithm is but are also seemingly ok with it being some "secret sauce" thing where no one else really knows whats in it. sure maybe theres nothing nefarious in it but even if that was true it would be naive to think no services would have anything nefarious (tiktok is just one example and people always say they have the best algorithm). not to mention the huge point of it not really mattering much if the algorithm is intentionally tampered with, negative unintentional things that result can be very significant and the emergent behaviors like that only grow as it gets more complex. everyone thinks they are in control of their own algorithm and the boss of what theyre seeing on their social media. i think even the absolute smartest of people arent immune to having their world views and perceptions of reality shaped by this stuff. studying this type of stuff for grad degree im doing rn is definitely making me realize more and more how powerful it is
and yeah all the smart home type stuff is horrific

It’s going to be looked back on in the future that so much of our society was left the whim of this “secret sauce” as foolish and detrimental. At least if things you know chance and dont go get worse. Which i dont think its healthy is think, im optimistic in the long term future this stuff will be rectified.

yeah i think non algorithm social media stuff like ktt prob has some very bad parts too
but the big data algorithms are really like a superpower or steroids for it. also crazy how on the flip side so much of the same type of tech with big data can be used for incredibly good things
people back in the day thought TVs were rotting brains. imagine showing them an utlra TV with infinite possibilities that watched you back even more than you watched it. and is regularly held in the hands of every kid
