Learned recently that we tend to overuse compression. Andy Wallace hardly uses it. There’s almost zero compression on MJs vocals on Thriller.

apparently bruce swedein hardly used any compression on the drums/percussion too

No multitracks and no A.I. isolating either so this is a straight remaster, no remixing whatsoever.

There is only so much you can do through mastering, however, considering just how narrow a master these early mixes were given, remastering has injected so much life back into them

you know I do mixing/mastering myself, right? I still consider myself somewhat novice but if you need help at all Id be hyped to lend a hand

I think that would be lovely! I was going to send it around to some audiophiles to see if they could offer anything that could improve it before I release it so I'll add you to the list.

I'll upload a mega link of a few pressings of the album which I would like you to check out, all recommended listening when considering tackling this beast. This is the hardest project for me as it has spanned years because I've kept learning new things about EQing along the track.

And then once I'm happy with the remaster, I'll send it to yourself for you 2c

these days, I most often find myself compressing either to do simple leveling, pulling things down to a more manageable dynamic range

or for some type of effect. I sometimes love when something is compressed to hell.
