It started as a spin off of SMT based on a snes smt game based on a school setting.

So basically Persona at the start where just smt games with younger protagonists and school settings

With 3 they changed the formula a lot tho and thats what made them so popular. Nowdays Persona might be their own franchise but to me their still smt games they share so much things
