Bro0o0sesI might be underrating Justin Timberlake as an artist so I could be wrong
But hasn't he always been like pretty safe for each era he was in
Like it always made sense with the current musical landscape and wasn't especially creative or crazy
Like he is good at it but it was always been safe

I’d disagree. I think he’s always been pretty ambitious compared to his contemporaries pre-motw. A song like Lovestoned just isn’t ordinary. Mirrors as a radio single? Bit nuts when you think about it.
I mean

yes and no
the singles for his first album were very much of the time
but they were done at such a high level, and having timbaland by his side definitely helped him get some experimental credibility (cry me a river has a god damn Gregorian chant)i will say tho futuresex on the other hand was him being a trailblazer, setting up the sound for the 2nd half of the decade. idt he’s had a moment that big or influential since, but like thats fine, the album is his opus after all

definitely not bizarre but I’d argue 20/20 and FS/LS set out to do something different from pop/r&b music at their respective times. I know for myself personally, those albums scratch an itch that no other pop albums do.
