What!!!
genres get so confusing
best way to think of genres imo is like venn diagrams or just adjectives. not supposed to be super strict and theres always overlaps
and not like colors where you look at one thing at think "it's blue" or "no, it's actually purple"
indie isnt a genre, its more just a subgenre of rock
best way to think of "indie rock" is subset of alternative rock that split off. originally was the independent/less mainstream stuff that had somewhat of a distinct sound even though the term was broad. "indie pop" also for the lighter more pop oriented stuff but after a while indie didnt even mean non-mainstream or independent anymore, more just a vague sound.
but now we've also reached a more confusing stage where people just use the words "indie" or "alternative" thinking thats the actual genre instead of just a type of rock. (there are also movements in other genres that use indie/alternative labels now which makes it more confusing)
all indie is alternative. not all alternative is indie
for indie think the strokes, pixies, pavement, the smiths, modest mouse, arcade fire
for alternative (but not indie) think nirvana, smashing pumpkins, radiohead, weezer. maybe those examples can help you understand
This….. makes sense. Yes. Once again, thank you RVI for the on-point a***ysis.

I have a big aversion to specific group of music fans... It's not against the artists but the stan culture around them
