save me’s review of meat is murder

yes, save me does like the smiths. i really try my hardest not 2 compare music 2 other music while i’m actively listening 2 it but i couldn’t help myself here.. this is an improvement from the debut in a lot of ways. lyrically, musically it’s a step above self titled. i love how concise & comprehensive this album is. it’s the perfect amount of songs & 40 mins is just the right amount of time 4 an album in my opinion & this does everything right. it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, it does what it needs 2 do. now as far as the lyrics go, i think they are great. i did find myself not as engaged as the debut because of the subject matter pertaining 2 things going on in manchester but that’s alright, i can still appreciate the sentiment. it’s not as dreadful as the lyrics on the debut but it’s still pretty bleak here & there. he has a lot on his mind & i think he did a wonderful job getting what he wanted 2 say out. so many different themes being tackled, i love it. that funk bassline was sick, really wish there was more of that here. musically it is a bit more diverse i think than the debut so that’s very good. i like this album. alright let’s move on

    top 3 fav songs

    that joke isn’t funny anymore

    well i wonder

    barbarism begins at home

    least fav song

rusholme ruffians - it just didn’t quite resonate with me, it’s not particularly a bad song, it’s actually pretty cool it just did nothing 4 me, perhaps a few more listens will do the trick

    overall score 7.5/10

save me’s review of the smiths

i am in a love/hate relationship with morrissey’s voice but by the end of the album i found myself being more fond of it than not. he is very expressive even if he doesn’t have the best singing voice, there’s a lot of emotion behind what he’s singing about. the music is a bit insipid but i can look over that 4 the most part considering it’s their debut. it’s not bad i guess i’m just spoiled coming off of listening 2 the cure 4 a week straight, there’s not a lot of variation, they have a particular sound on this album & they stuck 2 it, i can’t fault them 4 that. now, the songwriting is actually excellent. very poetic, a lot of imagery.. i am a bit unclear about what some of these lyrics actually mean but they are great. very esoteric & obscure in meaning.. that’s my favorite kind of poetry. in terms of songwriting i will give them a 8/10.. now let’s move on

    top 3 songs

i don’t owe u anything - i can’t 4 the life of me understand why he disowned this song, it’s f***ing beautiful. but whatever, this is my clear cut favorite & easily the best song on the album, at least 2 me anyway. 9/10

reel around the fountain - beautiful. 8/10

the hand that rocks the cradle - it doesn’t make sense how amazing the lyrics are on this song, this must have been cathartic 2 write as much as it was 2 record, very beautiful song. 8/10

    least favorite song

miserable lie - i have absolutely no idea what they were going 4 with this 1, it sounds so harsh.. & that continuous falsetto over those drums is something i will have nightmares about, something i will warn little children about, this is what they play on repeat in hell. i hate everything about it, will never listen again.

    overall score - 7/10
