well, their girlgroup in collaboration bighit (or should I say HYBE) has been slated to debut this year, they'll obviously need to debut soon as Source has no assests to make money from atm (unless HYBE wants to dissolve SouMu but I can't see that happening)

Oh geez this sounds really messy for Source if their next group doesn't smash. Gfriend was a monster group for so long it's sad to see them go out like this

I sound entitled af tbh lmao
Can’t blame idols for not renewing if they don’t want to. I guess it’s how it works after all.
Just have to make the most of the time they have left in case they don’t renew.

It’ll probably be marketed as “the first girl group to debut under hybe/bighit” more so than source. I think off that brand recognition alone they’ll probably do very well

Source has been bleeding money for a while anyway as a result of losing tour money through covid, I wouldn’t be surprised if hybe were to dissolve the label and create a new sub label for their girlgroup.

Yea I can see that taking place fr, with HYBE influence anything possible

gfriend posted individual letters and overall it's less and less likely that they "come back" as a group, even under a different name. so this really could be the end. there's debate and speculation with people theorizing from phrases said in the letters, but most give a sense that it really is the end.

while theres been more scary and serious things happening in life and my own personally, when the gfriend news broke, it oddly enough did provide relief from feeling so stressed with feeling.... sad.

my current circumstances kinda makes it hard to process. one sorta benefit is i guess it helps keep things in perspective. it's not like it was a decay process for the end of the group, nor were they kept in a basement with fans forever waiting. if i want to speculate, it's hard to imagine being that good at something and then just ending it suddenly. on the other hand, almost everything we see from idols is purposeful--- meaning, we can never really say how it is for them. maybe they feel free now to move on, and what's best is none of them have to take the public disdain for being the one(s) that wanted to quit the group.

of course, i have my sentimental reasons why i wish they could continue on. i remember coming across glass bead when it got released, and thinking ''damn, this low budget video, but amazing song'' and adding it to my monthly playlists. im sure ive shared this before, but there's also when me gustas tu came out and i was obsessed with it, and the girl that i was dating /eventually marry bought the Flower Bud mini, and reshot all the photos from the photobook with herself instead. She then printed out her own photobook and gave it to me as a gift. i dont even think i had even said how much i liked the song, or anything, but i guess she knew.

i think since maybe 2019, ive had this feeling of "once i see gfriend and iu live, i can be done with kpop". the sentiment is maybe even stronger now, but what im trying to say is that seeing them live was a huge wish i was clinging and waiting to come true.
    and now it won't.

what's worse is that since then, i felt it was ever more likelier that it was going to happen. even with the pandemic, it reassured me. there's a idea in philosophy or something that the more something to continues on to NOT happen, it's greater proof then that it will happen. it was something similar to that. "if they didn't come to sxsw, it's cause theyre' coming to kcon. and if they didn't come to kcon, well that's cause they're gonna do their own tour. and if they didn't come tour because of the pandemic, then it's FOR SURE they're touring afterwards."

so ive been hanging on to this hope that as s***ty as everything has been for me for the last months/(years at this point?), i could look forward to a future where i can see gfriend live, and things will be okay. it's not that there wasn't gonna be any other concerts by other artist, but just that i had really very few artists that seeing live would be so meaningful for me. ive been clutching onto these dreams but i guess i have to let this one go.

sorry, i know it's a very specific and privileged "calamity".

overall, this is perhaps the first disbandment that i actually feel devastated by. everything else, you either knew it was going to happen from the beginning, or things were just on decline (whether by time, line up changes, or quality/frequency of releases). it's just so unnatural to feel like they're actually done.

oh well, thanks to gfriend for all the memories and music. im not gonna hang on to hope about a future reemergence but who knows? in the same manner they left, maybe just one day i'll randomly open up my phone and they'll be back.

yeah with most disbandments you can very well see it coming but this is very different, they were extremely active last year (3 comebacks) after having new life pumped into the group through the Bighit acquisition, they didn't really show any signs of slowing down.

There hasn't really been a disbandment like this since Sistar... and even then that made more sense than this.

but idk, maybe they were just tired of idol life and wanna set out on individual careers 🤷‍♀️ that's what I got from their letters. They did say they wanted to be a longstanding group, akin to Shinwa but people are multifaceted, they change, no one is gonna hold the same thought process for that many years. This will probably end up being one of those Jessica cases in which we never find out the whole truth but I think it's probably better not to speculate too much.
