Think that’s just because of the tactical evolution of the game, all teams have better tactics now which has all teams become more compact, more defensive, more reliant on set pieces. This has happened in the prem, in the CL, and now international football.

Less room for individual players to show off and more reliance on tactics, which gives mediocre teams more chances to win, but has also made the game far more boring.
