    Synopsis

it is a step in the process of abolition lol. the point is to defund the police, say by 25-30%, allocate the funds towards social services. you keep educating the people, watching the crime drop etc., they begin to realize that the role of police is not safety, you defund them even more, and get to the point of abolition. so yes, defunding the police means abolishing the police.

the police’s role has begun to encompass far too many things the more time that’s passed. They do far much more than just ensure the safety and peace of the country like they’re supposed to atm, they have taken the role of social worker even among many other things. defund the police and get other groups fulfilling those duties. as a start

Dude deadass doesn't know defunding is more complicated than a paragraph on a message board

Oh we can talk about it for all the paragraphs you want. I know you guys like to co-opt rhetoric and assign it your own meanings, but the actual radical movements on the ground want to use defunding as a means to abolish. you can pretend all you want that its not what it is, but it is.

Closer to progressive policies? At the very least there is a modicum of pressure on Biden from the progressive faction of his party. How could a trump presidency be closer to progressive policies than that?

    1. “Defund the police” means reallocating or redirecting funding away from the police department to other government agencies

as you said, it's not abolition

you're taking a chunk of the police budget away and moving it elsewhere (community projects)

what did i get glaringly wrong lmfao

    2. im talking about the long game. i don't believe the country can become progressive overnight, no matter the wishful thinking. arguable obama ever had a supermajority: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/debunking-the-myth-obamas_b_1929869, but completely thats beside my point

but even then it was obvious that his policies, even as middle-of-the-ground as they were, were extremely unpopular in a sizeable chunk of the country, enough that one of trump's presidential themes is basiacally just "fuck obama!!!"
i feel the needlepoint of the whole nation will slowly shift more progressiv

Synopsis is talking about the long game (abolition of the police), you're talking more about the intermediate-short term where there are consequences 2-4 years from now if we try to make a slightly progressive move.

F*** that though, you have to prove that these measures work in order to win the American people over. Democrats have been too scared to actually take the leap on anything.

the police merely existing is the problem, not that their role has grown too expansive.
