most people thought it wouldn't unlock till 2022 cause sharding was scheduled before PoS since the ETH foundation felt like it was more important since it solves the Gas / Throughput problem

sharding is proving to be far more complex than they once assumed but Zkrollups are coming along much faster and get like half way there to sharding numbers, they'll be fully working in 2022

Zkrollups and sharding together will super charge throughput on Ethereum allowing for 100k transactions per second up from 15-45 right now lol
