finished reading the white paper, actually looks like it could be promising if people use their stuff and it works well, haven't found any info about people building on it yet but its running on a testnet on xdai it seems and there moving towards mainnet

I just wonder how efficient it can be it looks complex, seems like it could compete with Theta or Filecoin but also expand larger than what they do right now

looks like a couple different things all wrapped into a storage protocol the two main pieces are "PPS" messaging API + protocol and file storage "Swarm" API + protocol

it's built on a decentralized data clustering method that uses little 4kb data blocks "chunks" with their own unique hashes and hashes the data sequentially

this should allow for privacy according to them cause the chunks are so small it looks the same as all other types of data, transaction / request data etc

the part I found the coolest was how it stores the data

it builds nearby nodes into a neighborhood "Kademlia" then it uses network hops and some math to push the data thru to the right neighborhood when new data is modified..

it always is pulling data thru the neighborhood to make sure all the data is being backed up to the other neighbors so it's syncing the data all the time when its pulling it

so when new data is presented it sees it doesn't belong in that neighborhood and pulls the data into a neighborhood that's closer to right one, it takes multiple attempts because the data network is one way which i found odd but they claim its more efficient

so it doesn't use parrell communication instead the data just moves one way and it pushes a sync request back the same way

the idea behind the incentive structure "SWAP" is that you can store data and earn tokens for data people want more, so stuff people want more more people would host

you can pay for faster higher quality data with tokens if you wanted a better quality stream or if you started to use a lot more data then everyone else

when its doing the syncing it check timestamps on the chunks and it will move rarely used data to far slower storage that would take a while to recover from and I think at some point you could even lose your data so idk how good it would be for personal use

there are two types of chunks private one "Single Owner Mutable Chunks" you could use for a feed or a blog on a domain and then "DISC: Distributed Immutable Store of Chunks" where the data stays up till its not used for a long time

seems like you'd use DISC for building some kind of social media app.. wonder what a YouTube/Twitch style app would look like on, wonder what other ideas would even be popular on something like this interesting idea
