Do people just transfer some altcoin (based on the ratio) to ur metamask and swap using uni/1inch?

gemini is used for long term holding blue chip tokens like eth or btc since it's backed by the winklevoss twins

transfer eth to your metamask and go from there yeah. fees are insanely high so your mileage may vary

non-eth based tokens you'll have to get creative with your exchanges
