didnt quite stick the landing to me but nevertheless its yet another great woods album. really loved all types of voices hes been rapping in throughout the album
Loved the vocal performances on this album
Would you say more about why you didn't think the album stuck the landing?
Ran this back to back to back on a walk yesterday, really enjoyed it and can tell there's gonna be a lot for me to go back to
Looking forward to jumping into the lyrics
Golliwog reexplores a story he wrote as a child about an evil Golliwog. Woods says he’s always been fascinated by horror story collections, citing Mariana Enríquez’s Things We Lost in the Fire and Stephen King’s Cat’s Eye — the latter threads together short stories with a cat who finds themselves in every story. In his new work, Woods casts the racist, rag-doll-like caricature known as a Golliwog as the connecting overseer of the project.
“I think a lot of horror is social commentary on what people are scared of,” Woods says. He gives an example of Rosemary’s Baby, which is about “an evil cult manipulating this woman to have their baby,” but also speaks to a woman being stripped of her humanity in a misogynistic society. He also references Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Reductively, it’s about a haunted house, but more aptly, it’s a portrait of slavery. “I think that when something is well written enough or hits enough different points of social commentary, people try to move it out of that horror space and it becomes a thriller or whatever, which is fine,” Woods resolves. “But all of these works of art ultimately are about the same sorts of things.”
Thanks for this

i feel like a lot of woods albums follow more or less the same trajectory of stuffing the real good tracks in the first half that builds up to a certain point, then goes into 'exploration' with some highlights and then finishes with one or two 'closing statements'. well the latter exploration part didnt really hold me and i didnt like the last track that much to justify it
White I appreciate woods and to a certain extent elucid’s artistry and rapping ability, I just can’t listen to them. Aside from Aethiopes pretty much every album of theirs depresses the f*** outta me

Elucid is even more crazy than Woods with the abstract bars sometimes.
I ask at least you revisit in 1-2 years, maybe you will have a change in head space. At least you gave it a shot
I snatch the eyes out a cat so I can see in the dark

I’ve heard all the woods and Armand hammer albums multiple times, and I did used to fw them more but as I said their music largely depresses me: Aethiopes seems to be the exception. I do find Armand hammer worse though and I think that’s more to do with elucid

I can respect it. Honestly these 2 rapping about the perils of the world is a lot less depressing to me than misogynistic, violent, d*** fueled babble that occupies the mainstream. Hearing mainstream rap and what is acceptable as a radio rap single in 2025 depresses the f*** outta me.
To each his own though brother

Oh I agree. I’d listen to them any day over 2025 mainstream rap. The only rap album I’ve really f***ed with over the last year or two is the redman one tbh
