Rage and sexy drill are basically just variations of the trap production style though. The producers literally use most of the same drum sounds
Sure they’re “different”, but tonally and stylistically they’re from the same world
A 2016 rap beat does not sound anything like a 2006 rap beat
A 2006 rap beat does not sound anything like a 1996 rap beat
A 1996 rap beat does not sound anything like a 1986 rap beat
I can name you so many songs on the most popular rap albums of 2025 that would’ve not sounded out of place whatsoever on a 2016 rap album. That’s a problem
now which other genre of entertainment has been expected to do what you just described for 4 straight decades
it all just circles back to my point that we’re focusing on something that does not matter instead of enjoying what we have that you will run into a wall eventually
Sexy drill can only be made by an east coast nigga. No way yall are saying it’s the same as ATL trap
niggas in 2006 was listening to rap from 1996 wondering how can I make this but for me today
all your goats started rapping like the eras before them before they eventually found their own voice
we are currently in a transition and niggas are not giving rap a chance to experience it like times before thanks to the internet and having to be instantly fed all the time
long story short, Drake got niggas hooked to having to have a new thing musically every 1-2 years lmfao

It has absolutely nothing to do with Drake man. Rap has always creatively progressed every 5-6 years since the genre’s inception
"how can i make this about drake"
if anything, I was giving him some props for influence as well since this is a thread about influential rappers, right?

“Let people enjoy things” is exactly why the genre is at a creative standstill in the mainstream right now. Y’all accept whatever bullshit these artists put out
Kendrick, Drake, Cole, Future and their peers from that era did their part for fifteenth years.
They’re all pushing forty, it’s time for a new generation of artists to take over.
We should not be waiting on 40 something year old rappers to carry Hip Hop.
And Im not just talking about Hit records, it’s the entirety artistry that comes from superstars.

Jazz actually was very much noted for having eras. Cats was swinging until cool bop/bebop took over the 50s and 60s. And you were looked at as antiquated if you was still pushing that count basie swinging s*** (e.g. wynton “ dinosaur” marsalis) and then towards the end of the 60s and 70s you get fusion as things became more electric and also free jazz became a thing too.
And if you dont believe me, Miles Davis is literally the example of this, in his own words, “I changed music four times” to the president’s wife in the 80s.
Every genre had its own way of staying fresh.

the whole history of jazz is super fascinating tbh

You’re sounding like a fish looking for the ocean rn bro
I can’t name you one genre that hasn’t gone through year-by-year shifts that compound into eras and then decades
All the music we consume today has not made it to its first century
Let’s calm down on thinking anything’s a monolith
In 20 years Carti and thug will be from the same era because their relevant debuts will be measured to 2014-16
Ya’ll sound privileged as f*** lmao, go make it then nigga
I sound privileged cause niggas flooded the same sounding music and it became stale??
This whole thing is being way overblown imo. These charts don’t mean s***.
it just means rap is going back to being underground which is really what the streets need rn
rap went pop n we got insufferable amount of years w drake on top the streets don’t need that sht rn which is why the elimination of drake was necessary n i like drake more than the other dude
