People not giving Trina her props tbh and it makes me angry.

Eve and Missy were very good/lyrical in their own right imo.

But also, that's weird how that changed cause in the 80s and 90s, all the female rappers were lyrical like crazy.

Lauryn Hill AND Ladybug Mecca both were the stars of their respective rap groups because of it.

Im talking about upcoming female rappers at the time

Trina was dope af but she didn't have cross over appeal to go full on mainstream

She fit right in with the scene back then of trick daddy, mystical and them

That’s when you get into the music industry not really the culture aspect. Hip Hop being created while already being manipulated by people outside of the culture kinda f***ed it up. On some level this s*** out of our hands.

Not really, she fell off quick after nicki randomly bashed her when accepting an award at bet awards

Labels didn’t bother cultivating female talent, also Nicki didn’t really do anything to elevate other female rappers during her run. She shoulda done it during her 2013-2014 run. She was killing every feature, and her own music was still charting high. During that period for me, she was top 5 out man n woman included.

I definitely said the exact opposite.

Coming out with no actual female competition actually makes it quite harder since you goin head first against the fellas.

The thing is Nicki Minaj can actually brag that she was out there dolo. She had a verse better than Jay Z on the same song my nigga

I been wondering this for a while, but it's crazy that when Nicki came out it was like....legit no other female rappers to even come across as competition.

And not like "nicki was just that much better than the rest it didn't even matter" I'm saying, there was literally none. Which does make it that much harder she came out against pretty much a bunch of niggas.

But I'm thinking bout it. Missy Elliot was dealing with Graves disease, Remy Ma was in jail, Foxy Brown kept going in and out of jail, Eve was dealing with label problems + getting into acting, and more. It just seemed like a lot of up and coming female rappers in the 00s just...vanished.

Just kinda made for this deep void in female rap that Nicki was able to fill at the right time.

I'm not really saying this to say "Nicki got lucky" cause she deserves all the credit she gets (Dropped one of the greatest features ever on one of the greatest hip hop albums ever) but mostly to ask, why was there literally NOBODY else female rapper wise around when Nicki jumped on the scene?

I think it’s a testament to how Nicki refreshed the woman rapper archetype the way Wayne did for niggas, Kim and Pac laid down an initial aesthetic and they took it to the next level

I was a jit but I honestly don’t remember many woman rappers from childhood other than Diamond from Crime mob and Kim/Trina/Eve/Remy and vaguely hearing of Foxy. Seems like Nicki even if she on some semi hating s*** now with these names, kinda made space for a Cardi Meg Latto etc the way Uzi Thug and Carti could not have existed before Wayne’s run happened

Nicki influence on the new generation and social media were a perfect storm for the proliferation of female rap we have rn
