Hot take but I don’t think time has been kind to his legacy. The records dont show that he could not hit in the clutch to save his life, and Fred Wilpon was right when he said that he’s not a star. He’s a “people’s champ” kind of guy and a great archetype for what a great player looks like, but none of those years from 09-14 were emblematic of who he should’ve been.

Pete and DeGrom will surpass him on the mets totem pole if the mets win a ws in the next few years. He had 3 great years and citi field ultimately ruined him psychologically.

It was good when he would visit GKR in his final years. Not with him at the booth.

Don’t remember him in the booth at that time tbh but I like listening to the classic calls with him and Bob Murphy

He started getting hurt during his prime that’s what did it. And they should’ve had the dimensions at Citi Field today back then. That stupid ass wall.

They did tho, he still hit 29 home runs in 2010 before the dimensions were moved in even further.

I understand that its a tall task to completely switch up your hitting strategy at age 26-27 but at the end of the day what is his legacy as a player if were solely going off stats? He wasn’t a perennial rbi guy or batting average guy. He just hit doubles sometimes and struck out when it mattered

Obviously we know that spinal stenosis is the reason why but people really drag it w his legacy sometimes. And if you wanna see my childhood bedroom there was no one who idolized wright more than me lol

Can’t just go off of numbers when it comes to legacy, that’s for any player. When we remember legacies it’s not always about rambling off numbers imo tbh Wright has some Amazin moments in his career, this still count.

I mean time keeps moving forward so I don’t think when it’s all said and done he’ll forever be the greatest Met but when we speak on his Era he’s the face of it.

The good, the bad, and the ugly. Mets are full of “What could have Beens” fr sucks to say.

I see David being apart of the franchise in the future, I know he had a FO role but something real important.

I'm not tryna be pedantic with numbers but at the same time there's a fine line between appreciating a player's role on a ball club and gripping at straws to typecast them as a legacy player.

I sure hope he becomes a coach or a more prominent member of the team though. Probably somewhere 15-20 years down the line

Idk man, tbh the Mets don’t have that many position player legends with Hall of fame numbers. I mean the all time home run record is only a lil over 200 and that’s because Straw left

Gotta celebrate who we can lol but I think for now Wright earned his spot in Mets lore, especially for what he meant it the fan base. But in 20 years things could change.

my point is if Steve celebrates wright with the whole number retirement treatment before he gives it to strawberry/gooden, then its clear that he cares about optics just as much as the wilpons did and is not concerned with honoring "mets lore" in any integral manner

I hear you but idc which order they get retired in as long as they get their just due. I’m here for them just honoring Mets history.

Whether it’s for optics or not X Wright still owns plenty of Mets records. He’s gonna have his day and he’s still relevant with this current fan base.

Dont see his number being retired next year tho. I do think they’ll show love to more 80s/late 90s early 2000s players as far as retiring numbers or inducting them into Mets hall of fame. Possible some more OG Mets. But maybe 2024 since it’s 20 years since his debut they’ll have a “David Wright night”

id say it won't be till like 2028 or something for wright ... gooden and strawberry for the 30th anniversary may be on the nose but id be surprised if they stay on this trend of retiring a new number every year

Yeah I’m wit you I think Cohen wanted to get a couple of these out the way to sort of set a precedent of what’s to come moving forward. I just peeped they had Straw throw out the first pitch today too

I think many Mets fans want Gary Carter’s 8 to be retired next before anybody else.

i’m in for Gooden and Straw getting theirs retired before Wright but when I think of retired numbers I think of the impact and love that fans have and continue to have for those players beyond retired years and or after leaving the team. Wright is an exemplary example of that. but he said he’s not even going to the Old Timer’s Day this year because he doesn’t consider himself an old timer. So I think we won’t retire his number for a little while.

I wouldn’t be mad if Wright’s number was retired before Doc or Straw either. it’s an honor that David deserves as he was a captain for us. that’s definitely a number that will be retired though, he meant so much to the Mets organization and still does. he’s the face of the team from the era he was here.
