Neuropathologist Bennet Omalu, speaking generally about the progression of neurological issues and not specifically about West, says that the types of TBI traumatic brain injury suffered by West in a car crash can manifest with symptoms over time that may resemble a bipolar disorder. Omalu, whose discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in football players is chronicled in the 2015 film Concussion, says, “TBI can result in a variety of behavioral, cognitive, and mood disorders.”

Omalu tells VF that following the publication of the apology, a friend of Ye's reached out to Omalu with photos from after the car crash, of Ye in the hospital and of his totaled vehicle. Omalu says the friend asked if the concussions and TBI that resulted from the crash could be responsible for Ye’s “progressive behavioral changes.” Omalu responded, “Most definitely.”

“I have watched him across the years,” Omalu says of Ye. “There is no doubt in my mind that the TBI he suffered was a significant and substantial contributory factor to his progressive behavioral and cognitive impairment regarding his impulsivity and lack of restraint on the public domain.” Because traumatic encephalopathy is “permanent and progressive,” Omalu says, “He would need long-term multi-disciplinary rehabilitative and therapeutic medical care and monitoring.”
