The first half is a rip straight from intro by the XX

Nope, it’s a sample from OPR by Gesaffelstein

  • Where are you now when i need you most. S*** magical.

It’s more Kiss Land vibes than trilogy imo

In my opinon some choices in the production have the same mindset as Trilogy but (obviously) it sounds different than anything from back then.

Illangelo put delay on the kick in the first minute, reverb throws here and there on the vocal, a lot of automation, grainy percussion using portal output vst… I could go on. Kiss Land was more direct as far as mixing goes.

if the green background was red cover would be way harder imo

I think he chose not to go with a red cover because of MDM

    My darkest hours,
Girl, I felt so alone inside of this crowded room
Different girls on the floor, distractin my thoughts of you
I turned into the man I used to be

I gotta give this record a break—this album gonna be fresh af in March. I can’t believe we’re finally getting a concise 14 track album. Been wanting this vibe from him since Kissland.

Edit: Damn Kissland was only 10 tracks—flawless

No interesting production credits. Abel, Belly, Daheala, and Illangelo.

what do you mean not interesting, they're some of the members of the OG gang!

that "this house is not a home" line was so on the nose and brought the song down a notch

What? Lmao what a stupid f***ing opinion it’s one line out of a 6 minute song

I really don’t think it is

It definitely sounds similar, but he would’ve been included in the credits/splits if they actually sampled it, particularly when you consider the fact that they are previous collaborators

I'm curious, what do you think of this song?

I listened to it once just because curiosity got the best of me haha, I intend to wait for the album, in case the project next month is a concept album, and I know that if I replay the s*** out of the track I will under-appreciate it whenever listening to the album start to finish. :PP

As for what I thought of it, I can't really say. I mean it in the "I need to play it a couple more times to properly digest it" kind of way. If you'd tell me that, superstar-era Abel, would drop a 6 minute track (!!!!) and segment it in three pieces/styles (!!) I would be really surprised.

The initial lyrics felt nothing special. It reminded me "I Was Never There", cause I felt the same for the opening lines there too. But, don't mind me, I'm probably still bummed with some of his musical choices he did during his post KL era, so maybe subconsciously I have tiny grudge haha. Human nature. But I'm not a fooooollll, I intend to listen the tracks with an open mind, so open, you can call me JFK. Thus said, one listen isn't enough to have a final opinion if the opening lines are good.

I liked what they did with the instrumental, at the 1:30-2:00 stamp (if I remember right) where the drums/electronica come in and they come HARD. Very club/dance hall friendly. Second chorus is nasty, with the drums. Say what you want about Abel's songs, his artistic highs and lows, but one thing's for sure, he got some gorgeous, special vocals.

And the soft outro. Well, what can I say. He's born to make love songs.

With Blinding Lights and this, I like seeing him experimenting. I'm so glad. He needs to do it more often.

This, Blinding Lights, Try Me, Wasted Times, Hurt You (AND NOT ONLY) etc, fantasizing with instrumentals feel like a step in the right direction, and at the same time a step up. About damn time. 20 year old Abel in 2011 with his mixtapes made some gorgeous music for his debut. HIS DEBUT. Thus said, I consider (especially the 2011 Abel) him the Pied Piper of PBR&B/alternative R&B..where he went others followed in his trail.. So of course it's to be expected that he hones his skills and raises the bar even higher. How much he achieved it these years is debatable. But let's hope he gives us music that gives us a smile, music that we go to when we feel down for matters of love, and most importantly, music that makes us want to relisten years from now, and only get better with every listen.
