The movie is disgusting but I think people are missing the whole message of this movie.

Growing up in a strict culture and with conservative Muslim family in Europe, will take your freedom away and forbidding muslims, especially women, from doing anything that is defined as "western culture". The movie is trying to use the most, to show muslim girls should be able to do whatever they love, no matter cultural or family values.

I like the idea.. but is the answer babies twerking? f*** no. 🤢

    SIGH

I’m an actual film buff tho if it’s a controversial film I’m gonna f***ing see it not get scared by it and run away before seeing

Man..ignore these clowns, lol. I just finished the movie and there is nothing controversial about this. At the end of the day it's basically a mediocre indie flick. I might post a full review...but I usually do that with films that piss me off or films that I really enjoy.

This whole thread is a sad attempt at getting retweets for attention. Honestly a microcosm of one of the themes presented in the film, tbh. The irony.

these were linked in a groupchat i'm in and I didn't look at the rest of the tweets, it's why I added the edit about the guy being racist, so sorry about that. that said my twitter feed has blown up with clips of it and im disgusted at what ive seen. i understand the purpose was to make something transgressive and reflective. but the issue is to me they failed at what they attempted to do, and I don't even need to see the film to know that. if you make a point about society's addiction to sexualization and oversexualized hysteria, but in order to do that you have to actually sexualize real, literal children to this degree, there's a problem. you should have just written a book to convey these themes. it's not okay to involve actual children in this.
edit: also the fact that instead of promoting it that way netflix promoted it by its literal sexuality rather than the message it is supposedly conveyign about said sexuaity being a problem may be ironic but doesnt make it any less of a problem

You can literally Google a synopsis. It's not hard. The movie is not as profound as y'all tryna make it out to be. It's based on a very basic trope that is present in the coming of age genre where a young girl is the man character of a film/show/book/etc. It's taken to an extreme however, and the extreme is proudly displaying prepubescent girls in some sort of dance/twerk competition.

Why y'all think we actually need to watch this s*** to properly understand it as if it is hard to I do not know. But I'm pretty good on having to watch 10-12 year olds dressed up in an exposing manner to understand that young girls are sexualized and pressured into being sexually appealing at young ages. Y'all can have that.

Like if that's the message cool. No f***ing s***. But cool. You're naive if you don't think pedos are gonna have a field day jerking off to it and completely ignoring its implicit meaning though.

Thinking you know everything about the movie from reading a synopsis is hilarious

I honestly find it disgusting how manipulating and deceiving the campaign against this film is. That link you posted where the IMDB parental guide is edited is proof. The original post is f***ing lies and smears. It claims there is "female nudity of a minor." There is no nudity of a minor in this movie at all. And somebody has the nerve to refuse to watch the movie and post this garbage playing into this ridiculous outrage? The edited version is an accurate description of events in the movie. I know. I watched the movie myself.

    Here is my review...no spoilers.

‘Cuties’ at its core is a character study of an individual who is living in a society where those who seemingly get the most attention, have the most fun, and are accepted partake in actions that goes against the cultural values in which you are raised.

The movie follows Amy, a young lonely muslim girl who befriends a group of young girls who happen to be trying out for a dance competition. Amy is subjected to ridicule and peer pressure from them which leads her to start acting more like those same peers. She starts to dress like them, she begins to engage in social media, and is introduced to a whole new explicit world as a previously sheltered teen. Her naivety of social norms and need of acceptance soon lead her down a path that even her new peers disapprove. By the end of the movie Amy faces the final question…”Was it all worth it?”

A lot of the outrage of this movie has been focused on the portrayal of the young girls in the movie and how it panders to pedophiles. Not once in this movie did I think that the movie promotes pedophilia or sexualizes young girls for viewer pleasure. It’s quite the opposite. During the final dance sequence, we can visually witness how a lot people are disgusted with how sexual the girls’ performance is. The movie doesn’t even promote provocative dancing. The provocative dancing is just a reflection of what these young girls see in media and what they think will get them attention and accolades.

I will say this…it is uncomfortable watching little girls dance provocatively and have camera shots on their asses but there is no intention of glorifying this behavior for viewer pleasure. There is a scene where the girls are learning how to twerk. It’s played off as comedic and also meant to characterize Amy bonding with her peers by teaching them how to do it. Honestly, the controversy behind this had me unnecessarily a***yzing how long the camera lingers or positions itself on certain shots…which was unfortunate. Whether or not certain shots in the movies are necessary or not can be up for debate, but they do serve a purpose.

Overall, this movie was a decent indie flick. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s flaws lie in its lack of creative direction. And at a runtime of only 90 minutes, the movie could have spent more time developing the main character and her arch of rebellion more.

    3/5

I mean I get that the message of the movie is supposed to be sexualizing children is bad but in order to make the movie which conveyed that message they had to sexualize children...
